Due to concerns about the stability and age of the product, GOG is delisting Elder Scrolls Daggerfall Unity from their store. The title was a free download you could get from multiple sources, primarily made by fans. Developers didn’t get credited in the GOG version, however, after that being brought to the people in charge of GOG, that changed. It is unfortunate to see the game going away, but it can still be acquired in the Github repository of the original developers. We at Infinite Start will cover what this means.
Not everything is preserved
It was cool to see GOG try and preserve fan works too and letting them stay for free. But sometimes they did step over boundaries of people who were developing these projects. Thankfully, most of the time they recognized their mistakes, and made up for them. GOG is one of the few companies, and the only online store that offers titles that are DRM free, allowing people to preserve them easily and get the developers behind them paid.
However, sometimes delisting happens, and we have to come to terms with that. But as always, if something is not available for buying anywhere, then you are free to get it any way you want. This is why delisting is double edged sword that can affect everyone, buyers are unable to acquire the product, and a game is lost to the jaws of time. It is imperative to always try and preserve ever game that exists.
Live Services however are a big issue that is plaguing the industry for many years now. Those titles are often impossible to preserve due to their server side nature. But considering their quality and how they manipulate players to spend, it is better to preserve them as a lesson of what not to do when doing good games.
