Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Bans Mods

Marvel Rivals Season 1 bans mods

The launch of Marvel Rivals Season 1 has brought exciting new content, including The Fantastic Four as playable heroes, fresh maps, and a new Doom Match game mode. However, the update has also introduced a major change that’s leaving some fans disappointed—the disabling of custom-made mods.

Since the game’s successful debut in December 2024, Marvel Rivals players have enjoyed adding bespoke character skins through mods. But with the latest update on January 10, 2025, mods no longer seem functional. NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has consistently maintained that mods violate the game’s terms of service and has even threatened bans for players using them. With the addition of hash checking, a programming method used to verify data authenticity, the update appears to have rendered mods completely unusable.

Sorry to disappoint but Marvel Rivals patched out modding so this is cancelled.

This isn’t the first time NetEase has taken action against mods. High-profile cases like the ban on a controversial Donald Trump mod, which replaced Captain America’s head with that of the U.S. President-elect, had already signaled the developer’s zero-tolerance stance. While some mods have stirred controversy, such as those depicting superheroes in provocative ways, the decision to block mods seems more rooted in Marvel Rivals’ business model.

As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals relies on in-game purchases for profitability. Cosmetic mods, even those that are purely aesthetic, could undermine the game’s revenue streams by offering players free alternatives to paid skins and bundles. By disabling mods, NetEase is safeguarding its ability to monetize cosmetic items through character bundles and Battle Passes.

While many players understand the business rationale, the move has still sparked backlash. Fans are lamenting the loss of creativity and customization that mods brought to the game. Some creators have even taken to social media to share unreleased mods that will now never see the light of day.

Despite the disappointment among some players, Marvel Rivals Season 1 remains a strong start for the game, with new heroes, game modes, and content to keep fans engaged. However, the modding community will need to adapt to this new, stricter era for the game.
