If you’ve played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt along with it’s subsequent story DLC’s, you already know there were a lot of foreshadowing regarding series protagonist Geralt finally passing on the mantle of the Witcher to Ciri and fittingly, she has been confirmed as the main protagonist for the upcoming The Witcher 4. And in a recent interview with IGN, Doug Cockle, the voice Actor behind Geralt, has expressed his enthusiasm and support for developer CD Projeckt’s decision behind the change in protagonist for their upcoming Action RPG.
“I’m really excited,” said Geralt actor Doug Cockle, “I think it’s a really good move. I mean, I always thought that continuing the Saga, but shifting to Ciri would be a really, really interesting move for all kinds of reasons, but mostly because of things that happen in the books, which I don’t want to give away because people, I want people to go read. So yeah, I think it’s really exciting. I can’t wait. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done.”
Sebastian Kalemba, the Game Director for the upcoming The Witcher 4 has also added that as Ciri is much younger than former protagonist Geralt, the devs as well as the players can have far more freedom to explore and define her character in ways that were impossible with Geralt. This also opens up tons of exciting role-playing aspects in the upcoming game as you can take Ciri’s character into vastly different directions in terms of choices and developments.
Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga has also stated that Ciri was the only logical choice as a protagonist for the series moving forward.
“It was always about her, starting from Saga when you read it in the books. She’s an amazing, layered character. And of course, as a protagonist we said goodbye to Geralt previously. So this is a continuation. I guess for all of us it’s like she was meant to be. That was always her.”
The Witcher 4 is currently in development and no official release date has been announced as of yet. The game is using Unreal Engine 5 and it’s looking pretty incredible, as seen from it’s Reveal trailer.
