Black Ops 6 Faces Backlash Over Squid Game Crossover Paywall

Black Ops 6 Squid Game Crossover

The highly anticipated Squid Game crossover event in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While the crossover offers a range of exciting rewards, Activision confirmed that some of them are locked behind a paywall. Players will need to purchase the Premium Battle Pass, priced at 1,100 COD Points (roughly $9.99), to access these exclusive items. This decision has stirred dissatisfaction within the community.

The Squid Game crossover includes various rewards, such as unique Operator skins, weapon blueprints, and other cosmetics. However, the Premium Battle Pass is required to unlock items like:

  • “Front Man” Operator
  • “High Authority” Assault Rifle Blueprint with Tracers
  • “Roped In” Finishing Move
  • “Boss Orders” SMG Blueprint with Tracers
  • “Don’t Look” Equipment Skin
  • “Who’s Left?” Gun Screen, and more.

These rewards, which many players hoped would be free, have been placed behind a paywall, adding to the frustration.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the Squid Game event since its announcement, but the news about locked content has not been well-received. Many players feel that tying premium rewards to a collaboration designed to promote the new season of Squid Game adds unnecessary monetization.

Some fans expected Activision to reconsider after the Premium Battle Pass details were leaked earlier, but the company has stuck to its plans. This has led to some players vowing to stop spending money on the game altogether.

This controversy comes at a time when Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is already facing challenges. Despite a strong launch, the game’s player count on Steam has dropped significantly in recent months. Players cite issues such as a lack of engaging maps and events, persistent anti-cheat problems, and stale content as reasons for leaving.

The Squid Game crossover controversy has added to the growing dissatisfaction. Many believe the game’s paid structure, unlike free-to-play titles like Fortnite, makes its reliance on microtransactions harder to justify.

While the Squid Game crossover could have been an exciting addition to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the paywall has overshadowed its appeal. Activision seems unlikely to make changes to the Premium Battle Pass despite the backlash, leaving fans disappointed.

As the gaming community debates this monetization strategy, it remains to be seen how Activision will respond to player concerns moving forward.
