Black Myth: Wukong’s developer has stated that the current delay of the game’s Xbox port is due to the Series S because of the console’s limited memory that’s causing a bottleneck, which effectively means the game is prone to severe performance issues when running on the console.

In a post on Chinese social media website Weibo, Game Science co-founder and CEO Feng Ji celebrated Black Myth: Wukong’s Game of the Year win at the 2024 Steam awards, while also shedding a light on the Action Role Playing title’s absence on the Xbox platform which he commented is specifically due to optimization issues with the Xbox Series S console.

“The only thing missing is the Xbox,” he said, per machine learning translation, “which somehow feels a bit wrong, but that 10GB of shared memory — without years of optimization experience — is really hard to make work.”

His comment is aimed at the lack of processing power in the Series S compared to the Series X version. The Series S has a total of 4 Teraflops of GPU compute compared to the Xbox Series X’s whopping 12.2 Teraflops, along with a drastic drop in it’s memory allocation, which is 16GB on the Series X and 10GB on Series S.

Black Myth: Wukong is one of the most impressive looking game of last year...

Black Myth: Wukong has been one of the most demanding games in terms of performance across all platforms, even struggling to run well on both Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X consoles and going as far as to require Frame Generation in several of it’s areas. And as Frame Generation generally requires a hefty amount of memory to run, Feng Ji’s statements are understandable as to why Series S’ 10 GB might turn out to be a problem for the game.

But hopefully, the studio will be able to perform the necessary optimizations required for the console to finally run the game at acceptable settings, in time so the game gets a much deserved release on the Xbox systems. Also, Microsoft’s Xbox release policy dictates that a game must be released across both Xbox Series X and S and not just for the more powerful console.

Black Myth: Wukong has sold a total of 18 million copies while an expansion is currently being developed. The 2024 Action RPG has also received a huge update last month which added new equipments and many other quality-of-life features. The game is currently available on both PC and Playstation 5, but it’s currently unclear when it’s Xbox version will come out.
