Ex Rockstar Games developer, Obbe Vermeij, recently shared his thoughts on Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA 4), describing it as “too dark and depressing” for the series. Vermeij expressed his views during an interview with SaninPlay, where he also discussed his concerns about GTA 6 potentially disappointing fans.
Vermeij believed GTA 4 represented a major shift towards a more serious and realistic tone, which he felt was too dark compared to the series’ usual blend of humor and action, leading to mixed reactions from fans and critics.
Despite its darker tone, GTA 4 achieved critical and commercial success. The game’s detailed world and engaging story received praise, but some players found the somber themes less enjoyable. Vermeij suggested that future GTA games should return to a lighter and more humorous tone, similar to earlier installments.
The release of GTA 5 saw Rockstar shift back to a more light-hearted and fun approach, a move that proved successful, with the game selling around 200 million units. Vermeij’s comments have reignited debates among the gaming community, with some agreeing with his assessment and others defending GTA 4‘s unique approach.
