Bungie Confirms Employee Layoffs

Earlier today many were surprised to learn a number of changes occurring at Bungie. These include potential layoffs, including Hippy their community manager, the potential delay of Marathon and Destiny 2:The Final Shape, plus more.

While some things remain unconfirmed, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons confirmed layoffs in a brief post.

Today is a sad day at Bungie as we say goodbye to colleagues who have all made a significant impact on our studio. What these exceptional individuals have contributed to our games and Bungie culture has been enormous and will continue to be a part of Bungie long into the future.

These are truly talented people. If you have openings, I would highly recommend each and every one of them.

This is serious and unfortunate news given Bungie was winning the community over with recent strong moves. These include accessing your vault from orbit, a new Memento, and finally giving Always on Time competition for best sparrow.

Earlier, former Destiny community manager and current Valorant community manager, dmg04 added the following comment.

Getting texts from friends impacted by layoffs this morning. It is frustrating – infuriating even – to continue seeing people who strap in to do good work losing their financial security due to poor management. The continued echoes of poor decisions made that >feel< avoidable.

In a few of these cases, knowing how much effort these folks put in during incredibly difficult development and sentiment times puts a sour taste in the mouth. Proactive/reactive work, always at the end of the funnel and having to make due with what they had. And now, let go.

To those impacted today – please feel free to ping me on linkedin. Happy to keep an eye out for listings, or even be a reference. Much love.

At this time some details remain in the air. The most notable being the potential delay of Destiny 2: The Final Shape from Feb. to June 2024, and Marathon being pushed to 2025. Even if these are true, it remains to be seen how Bungie will address this delay in Destiny 2.

The last time this happened there was a small supplemental update, as there is no way the last season will be able to maintain a sizable portion of the player base for the additional months. But, on the other hand, the upcoming season will feature the second Lightfall dungeon, and potentially add crafted weapons to Garden of Salvation.

Whatever the course ends up being, this will likely be revealed with The Week in Destiny on Thursday.
