Kratos, the protagonist of the God of War series of games, is rightfully one of the most iconic and memorable videogame characters ever created with a fully developed character arc that spans across more than three console generations and 7 titles (including the PSP God of War games). But if you’ve ever wanted to experience his early days or before he became the God of War in the original trilogy, now you can as God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2.5D Metroidvania-style action title is available right now on the PlayStation Store.
The game was first announced in yesterday’s State of Play event by Sony and was shadowdropped promptly in both Standard and Deluxe versions.
The game looks visually colorful and aesthetically pleasing with a cartoony-yet-rich art style that seems to have captured the unique feel that any God of War fan might expect. Also, despite being a 2.5D title, there’s plenty of action and cool abilities that you’ll be able to use in the game, as showcased by the trailer so yes, Sons of Sparta is still a God of War game, through and through. There’s monsters, sinister-looking creatures, magical beings and a wide range of fantastical elements that makes this game feel like a lost chapter in the series that’s been brought to life which is great news for all fans.
The Santa Monica studio was also the ones who had made the terrific God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta on the Playstation Portable and despite being handheld titles, they really captured every bit of the same look-and-feel that you can expect from the mainline God of War trilogy. So we can certainly expect the devs to work their magic again on a smaller title like Sons of Sparta.
The Standard edition of God of War: Sons of Sparta is available for $44.95 AUD while you can buy the Deluxe edition for $59.95 AUD which comes with collectibles and bonus in-game contents.
