PlayStation 6 Handheld Rumored to Feature Dockable Performance Boost

A well-known gaming industry leaker has shared new details about a possible PlayStation 6 handheld console. This device may include a dockable feature that could significantly improve its performance. The rumor comes from YouTube content creator Moore’s Law Is Dead, who mentions a console with the internal codename “Canis.” When connected to a television, this handheld could elevate its capabilities, similar to the popular Nintendo Switch feature.

The report claims that the rumored PS6 handheld would increase its clock speed from a base of 1.2 GHz to about 1.65 GHz when docked. This boost is expected to more than double the ray tracing abilities of the PlayStation 5, greatly enhancing graphical quality. The handheld may feature a 6-core AMD Zen 6 processor with integrated RDNA 5 graphics. While performance would improve in docked mode, the article notes that its raw rasterization performance might still be slightly below that of the PS5 unless games are specifically updated to take advantage of the handheld’s design.

Backward compatibility is an important topic for any new console, and this leak suggests the PS6 handheld would be able to play both PS5 and PS4 games. This would help players transition smoothly with their existing game libraries and reflect Sony’s ongoing commitment to offering access to prior-generation titles. Additionally, the handheld is rumored to have a computational bandwidth about 60% greater than the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X, making it competitive in the portable gaming market.

It’s essential to understand that these are unconfirmed leaks, not official information from Sony. Both the PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Xbox consoles are also said to use AMD’s RDNA 5 technology and are expected to launch in 2027. As with all rumors, these details should be taken with a degree of skepticism until Sony makes an official announcement.
