Developer Leenzee Games has released patch 1.5 for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers containing numerous performance and stability improvements for the Soulslike title, while also making unexpected changes to the game’s story and even to some enemies that many players are finding pretty disappointing.
And though the patch brings several welcome improvements to the gameplay including speeding up the healing animation, letting players dodge cancel out of recovery animations as well as allowing players to respawn closer to bosses they’ve died to, but the additional changes made to the narrative as well as the enemies continue to stick out sorely, greatly detracting players from enjoying Wuchang: Fallen Feathers the way they should.
And those changes include making the in-game NPCs unkillable which severely alters the “madness” mechanics that brought an interesting new gameplay element in Wuchang, also drastically changing how the fourth chapter in the game plays out, making a previously challenging level into a rather dull and boring slog.
While the biggest of the new changes are in the area of boss fights where several highly challenging bosses no longer “die” after being defeated, instead they just stand or even run away as the game describes them as “exhausted”. And this is where many players are criticizing the game as making several of the game’s bosses totally unkillable heavily alters the core theme of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers which is accepting the inevitability of death, physically and philosophically.
And while developer Leenzee has yet to comment on the reasoning behind the changes impacting the game’s story and boss fights, several players have pointed out that they might have something to do with the historical context of the game’s narrative.
