The Elder Scrolls: Legends Officially Shuts Down

The Elder Scrolls: Legends

The Elder Scrolls: Legends has officially stopped its operations. After 8 years of engaging players, this digital card game (which was free-to-play) has reached its conclusion. As of January 30, 2025, you can no longer download or enjoy the game. Its servers are shut down; so, without an offline mode, the game has basically disappeared from the digital world. However, the impact it had during its time should not be ignored.

A Quiet End for Bethesda’s Card Game

Originally launched in 2017, The Elder Scrolls: Legends brought the cherished world of The Elder Scrolls into the arena of collectible card games. This game offered a unique way to build decks and engage in strategic play. Players were immersed in a narrative-rich campaign, battling the High Elf Naarifin, while also enjoying multiplayer matches. Over the years, they navigated through eight expansion sets. However, even with positive reviews and a loyal player base, Legends struggled to maintain its momentum.

In November 2024, Bethesda announced that the game would shut down in early 2025. Although no specific reason was given, it seems that declining player numbers and the costs of keeping servers running played a big role in this choice. By late 2024, the count of players online had dropped to the mid-hundreds, making its eventual closure not surprising, but still disappointing for long-time fans.

With Legends now gone, many fans are turning their attention to what’s next for the franchise. The Elder Scrolls VI was first teased back in 2018; however, details have been hard to come by. Bethesda has stated that full development will start after Starfield and some leaked papers suggest a possible release in 2026—although this is still uncertain.

Meanwhile, Bethesda has recently found success with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which has already attracted over four million players. Because a PlayStation 5 release is expected in the first half of 2025, the company is focused on its upcoming big projects. For fans who enjoyed The Elder Scrolls: Legends, its end marks the close of a chapter. Although the game is gone, its unique take on Elder Scrolls lore and strategic gameplay will be remembered by those who stuck with it until the very end.
