Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has recently weighed in on the current state of Xbox, which is going through a massive restructuring process that has seen a total of 268 number of employees being let go from the brand this week, and with an additional 1,600 developers set to lose their jobs before the end of the fiscal year. However, the Microsoft CEO has presented an optimistic outlook on the whole situation, stating that the company is going through a process of “streamlining” which is “great to see” and can result in a more optimal business model for the brand in the near future.
In a recent interview with the Sources Podcast with Alex Heath, he revealed his take on the current trajectory of Xbox:
“I feel fantastic about the IP we have right now. If I look at the studios, the IP portfolio we have, and our ability to then take that and produce great games going forward, I feel fantastic. There’s some amount of streamlining the team is doing, and Asha is doing, which is great to see.
Then we have to invent the right sustainable business model that allows us to deliver gaming to more and more people. That has always been the goal, which is we want to be a great publisher and a great platform provider for games across both PCs and Xboxes. So that is sort of our goal, and I think Asha and the team have said that Xbox is going to get back to growth this next fiscal year, and that’s the plan they’re executing on, and in that process, do a bang-up job of producing some great games.”
Xbox is currently in their second round of mass layoffs after around 1600 number of developers were let go in June, as a part of the ongoing ‘Reset’ process in the company, and is currently expected to continue with their phases of job cuts, although that may fall short of the full 3200 employees that was stated back in summer this year.
