It seems developments on both next-gen versions of Playstation and Xbox are picking up the pace as according to Insider Gaming, the final designs for the chips or processors for those systems are complete and ready to be sent to the manufacturers to be built. Which means the core design phases for the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix are pretty much finished and may likely enter the production phase sooner than we expect.
And now thanks to hardware leaker KeplerL2, we may also have a rough estimation on the specifications of those chips as well, which sounds extremely impressive from a technical standpoint, although it’s not really much of a surprise at this point that both systems are going to be absolute beasts.
In a recent post on NeoGAF, Keplar has claimed that the Playstation 6 will deliver “up to 80 TFLOPS and will be faster than the RTX 5080”, while the Xbox Project Helix will have 56 teraflops going for it. The term Teraflops indicate raw computing power and in terms of videogames, how many polygons can be rendered. However, in terms of practicality, overall gaming performance is a culmination of many other systems and factors, rather than the sheer teraflop count. But in anyway, the numbers sound highly impressive and if true, we may be looking at a super high-end gaming PC grade output levels from the next-gen Playstaion, and the next Xbox as well.
The numbers look even more impressive when directly compared to their current-gen counterparts: The PlayStation 5 Pro features 16.7 teraflops, the base PlayStation 5 reaches a maximum of 10.28, the Xbox Series X console has 12, and the Xbox Series S has 4 teraflops. This makes the PS6 a massive jump in computing power over the PS5 Pro and the same goes for the next-gen Xbox as well.
Although, a bigger question now arises regarding the supposed price point of the next-gen consoles as in the currently overpriced market in the industry, providing these configurations in consumer devices would require an abysmally high amount of cost for both systems which the average gamer may not be willing to, for obvious reasons.
