Microsoft has initiated another major reorganization across its Xbox gaming division, cutting 268 jobs and shifting structural oversight for several of its marquee development studios. Among the most prominent changes detailed in an internal memo by Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty is the placement of Obsidian Entertainment directly under the Bethesda umbrella. The decision unites the two RPG-focused studios under a single operational structure, formalizing a partnership following years of separate development tracks under the broader Microsoft banner.
The restructuring comes as part of a wider effort by newly appointed Xbox leadership to streamline first-party operations and control rising costs. Under this updated framework, Obsidian will retain its current active development slate—including Grounded 2—while officially partnering with Bethesda Game Studios on an unannounced Fallout project. Beyond the RPG group, Microsoft is consolidating Turn 10 Studios and Playground Games into a unified force, while expanding the purview of Activision, King, and Bethesda to manage smaller internal teams and legacy franchises.
The corporate realignment carries distinct historical weight given the complex relationship between Bethesda Softworks and Obsidian Entertainment. The two entities famously clashed following the 2010 release of Fallout: New Vegas, where development disputes, technical issues, and contract bonuses tied to review performance created lasting friction. By placing Obsidian under Bethesda’s administrative wing, Microsoft aims to eliminate redundancy and align teams with shared creative lineages, though the move inevitably raises questions about studio autonomy moving forward.
These operational shifts arrive during a continuous wave of consolidation across the Xbox division, which has seen repeated workforce reductions and studio re-evaluations throughout 2026. Microsoft leadership indicated that the current round of 268 layoffs brings the ongoing restructuring plan roughly three-quarters of the way toward completion. Additional studio-level impacts include staff reductions at Halo Studios, with future development on the Halo franchise being transitioned to a dedicated team within Activision rather than remaining strictly under its former primary home.
