Bit Reactor Furloughs Most Staff Weeks Before Star Wars Zero Company Launch

Bit Reactor Furloughs Most Staff Weeks Before Star Wars Zero Company Launch

Developer Bit Reactor furloughed roughly 80 percent of its development team just three weeks before releasing its acclaimed tactical strategy title, Star Wars Zero Company. Reports first published by Stephen Totilo at Game File confirm that the studio ran critically low on operational funds ahead of the August 27 launch, forcing leadership to halt active payroll before knowing how the title would perform commercially. Only a small group of core staff remained on payroll to manage technical stability and post-launch updates.

The timing creates a stark contrast with the game’s critical and commercial reception. Star Wars Zero Company arrived on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S to strong review scores and briefly claimed the top spot on Steam’s top-sellers list. Studio leadership directly confirmed the pre-launch furloughs, emphasizing that the decision originated within Bit Reactor rather than from publisher Electronic Arts or IP owner Disney. Management stated they hope strong sales will allow them to restore pay and recall impacted staff, though former senior employees express doubt over how many developers will ultimately return.

The financial strain surfaced publicly due to an ongoing lawsuit in Maryland between Bit Reactor co-founders Greg Foertsch and former COO Alison Kelly. Kelly sued the studio following her departure in 2024, claiming co-ownership, breach of contract, and requesting $20 million in damages. Filings submitted on August 12 detailed the studio’s cash shortfall, revealing that contractor contracts were terminated and standard staff members were placed on unpaid leave as the development budget ran dry.

The situation highlights the financial fragility independent studios face when delivering high-budget licensed projects. While Bit Reactor successfully delivered a polished tactical RPG set in the Clone Wars era, pre-release development costs exhausted capital reserves long before initial sales revenues could reach the studio. Whether the title’s early commercial success can stabilize the company and bring its original development team back into the office remains an open question as court proceedings continue into early 2027.
