Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director Daniel Vávra has voiced sharp criticism regarding Grand Theft Auto 6 following Rockstar Games’ recent 27-minute “Extended Look” showcase. The veteran writer and game designer publicly questioned the upcoming title’s narrative hook, arguing that the substantial footage failed to establish compelling character motivations for co-protagonists Jason and Lucia.
Vávra, known for emphasizing historical accuracy and deep narrative structure in Warhorse Studios’ medieval RPG series, took to social media to break down his concerns. He stated that a strong story requires clear internal and external conflicts alongside complex characters, components he felt were absent from the recent preview. While praising the showcase as a “technological miracle,” Vávra described the dual leads as uninteresting figures killing for money without a clear thematic purpose.
The director extended his critique to the broader creative trajectory at Rockstar Games, explicitly pointing to the departure of co-founder and lead writer Dan Houser in 2020. With Houser having no involvement in the script, Vávra suggested that the long-awaited crime saga risks prioritizing open-world chaos and multiplayer potential over the tightly constructed single-player narratives that defined previous entries in the franchise.
Rockstar Games has not issued a direct response to Vávra’s comments. However, early promotional materials released by the publisher describe a more traditional crime narrative, outlining a story where an easy score goes wrong and forces Jason and Lucia to navigate a broader conspiracy across the state of Leonida. Whether the final game delivers on those character arcs or leans into raw sandbox spectacle will remain unanswered until Grand Theft Auto 6 officially launches.
