Discord has just denied reports of being served with publisher Take-Two’s recent subpoena for obtaining information on the leaker behind the slew of unofficial gameplay releases for GTA 6, moreover the company has said that when they do receive it, they’ll evaluate several aspects of it before officially responding. Discord marketing director Ryan K. Rigney wrote the following on his X/Twitter account: “Discord has not yet been served with a subpoena from Take Two. When we do, we’ll evaluate the validity and scope before responding.”
The recent spree of GTA 6 leaks from Cyberleek (could be one person or even a group) has managed to put a dent on Take-Two as the company has reportedly lost a staggering $2 billion in terms of overall value along with a small decline in it’s stock price. And as a response, the publisher has now issued multiple subpoenas in a federal court requesting information from both Microsoft and Discord which would help them zero in on the leaker(s) who is responsible for the spew of gameplay leaks of the upcoming GTA 6.
Microsoft has already granted Take-Two’s subpoena, with Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet confirming that they’re currently helping Rockstar and Take-Two protect their IP.
Meanwhile, Reclaim The Net, a group advocating free speech and privacy, has criticised the Discord subpoena in a recent tweet, on grounds that it might end up targeting the wrong people: “Copyright law is supposed to target infringement”, “Here, it’s being used to hunt for identities. Take-Two is seeking DMCA subpoenas that could expose users who didn’t leak or upload GTA VI footage, but who participated in conversations within Discord servers where the leak was discussed.”
“To file a claim is cheap and quick, and the compliance cost falls on the platforms. There was a time when companies would at least try to maintain the guise that their targets were limited to infringement but, these days, they’re getting more brazen and now hitting anyone who happens to have been standing nearby.”
An extended look at the upcoming GTA 6 is coming to Netflix on August 27 and will be made available for everyone to see on Youtube later that day, so if you have a subscription to Netflix, you’ll be able to get a first look at some of the features of the most anticipated videogame of all time when it premiers on the platform at 3 PM ET on August 27, and will be available on Rockstar’s own Youtube channel at 9 PM ET on the same day.
GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
