Former Rockstar Developer Speaks on the Ongoing String of GTA 6 Leaks

As publisher Take-Two Interactive is currently on their hunt to track down the entity named Cyberleek that’s behind the spew of unofficial gameplay leaks of Rockstar’s upcoming open world behemoth GTA 6, one former Rockstar developer has said that the leaks wouldn’t really have much of an impact on the overwhelming success of the game itself, in any way.

Obbe Vermeij, former Rockstar Games technical director who was a part of Rockstar North from 1995 to 2009, wrote on Twitter/X about the overall consequence of the snippets of leaks which, according to him, are being significantly blown out of proportion.

“Calm down everybody. The leaks are a nothing burger,” Vermeij started.

“As a marketing strategy R* is trying to keep the game under wraps longer than other publishers. All that has happened is that some footage has escaped. Slightly ahead of the Netflix thing next week.

“90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets. They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers.

“I imagine the teams are a little annoyed about it but not more than that. I was there during Hot Coffee. It was a nightmare for management (R*NewYork) but didn’t affect us (R*North) much. The current leaks are far less consequential than HC was.

He then made it clear that the leaks are “just a tiny blip” on the enormous success that GTA 6 has already shaped up to be in many ways, also, according to him, will possibly “sell for the next 15 years or so”.

Vermeij also spoke on the growing possibility that Cyberleek has a fully working build of GTA 6, based on some of the leaked gameplay footage: “If that is the case it probably only runs on a devkit,” he insisted. “Devkits have more memory. There probably isn’t a build in existence that would run on a retail PS5 at the moment.”

An extended look at Rockstar’s upcoming GTA 6 is coming to Netflix on August 27 and will be made available for everyone to see on Youtube later that day, so if you have a subscription to Netflix, you’ll be able to get a first look at some of the features of the most anticipated videogame of all time when it premiers on the platform at 3 PM ET on August 27, and will be available on Rockstar’s own Youtube channel at 9 PM ET on the same day.

GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
