Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine is confirmed to avoid the biggest sore point from some of their previous AAA heavyweights as it’ll have you playing only as Logan for the entire duration of the game. One of the weakest parts of both Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 was the missions where you had to play as MJ in several stealth based sections, which were not only a whole lot less fun and quite a bit dull compared to playing as the iconic webslinger, those missions also broke the overall flow of the games in more ways than one.
But thankfully, the upcoming Insomniac title manages to side-step this completely and as a result, it’s sure to deliver a more uniform and tightly-paced gameplay experience.
In a new interview with GamesRadar, senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and head of technology Mike Fitzgerald have confirmed that throughout the game, the only character you’ll be playing as, is Wolverine.
“Wolverine is our only playable character,” however, the developer duo also mentioned that both Sabretooth or Mystique will be able to “Dynamically join in with your combos for little team-up moves to knock out the bad guys.” Seems both of them will work in the same vein as Robin and Nightwing did in Arkham Knight during select action set pieces where you could perform double takedowns involving those characters.
The confusion regarding the possibility of other playable characters in the game arose with some of the footage of Jean Grey in the latest gameplay video for Wolverine, which made many players and fans speculate whether there will be sections where you have to play as her but now the devs have put all of those doubts to rest.
Marvel’s Wolverine comes out in two different editions–the Standard version of the game will cost you $69.99 while the Digital Deluxe version sports a price tag of $79.99. There’s no mention of a collector’s edition that’s geared towards enthusiasts so if you were hoping for physical collectibles like statues and maybe action figures, looks like there won’t be any of that.
Wolverine is slashing his way into the Playstation 5 on September 15, 2026.
