Wolverine’s Suit Will Also Regenerate Itself in the Upcoming Game, Insomniac Says

One of the smaller highlights from the State of Play gameplay reveal for the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine was that Logan’s suit was also regenerating itself alongside his body, which was first spotted by the fan community. And in a recent interview with IGN, Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac, and senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed has explained that his suit will indeed repair itself dynamically in the game, and it was a design choice intended to balance out the practicalities of some of the combat elements in Marvel’s Wolverine.

“I think mostly there’s some practicalities to it,” Fitzgerald said. “You can’t play through most of the game wearing just shredded rags on his body. So we find the right balance between clothing that reflects the gameplay you’re doing and this brutal combat and the realities of that, and then finding the right moments to have it restore itself so you get that right cinematic feel of Wolverine.”

“Early on you would be playing through missions and your clothes are shredded for way too long,” she said. “You don’t feel as powerful as you’re playing through. So yeah, we definitely found that right balance was the right thing to say.”

The devs also detailed some of the realistic ways in-game damage has been portrayed in the upcoming game, both cosmetically and otherwise:

“We invested a lot in how damage is reflected on him in his suit, on enemies and their suits,” Fitzgerald explained. “And then as you attack them, the blood sprays coming off them are some really interesting fluid tech. So it’s not just pre-baked visual effects. These are actual blood particles coming out. They hit the ground and make the exact splatter mark they would make if they land on Logan. They leave blood there. If he walks through water, it washes off and leaves blood swirls in the water.”

Marvel’s Wolverine comes out in two different editions–the Standard version of the game will cost you $69.99 while the Digital Deluxe version sports a price tag of $79.99. There’s no mention of a collector’s edition that’s geared towards enthusiasts so if you were hoping for physical collectibles like statues and maybe action figures, looks like there won’t be any of that.
