Bethesda Game Studios had revealed their roadmap for the future in last month which includes Remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas and although their release dates are currently unknown, they’d likely arrive in 2027 or beyond. While Fallout 3 remains one of the most pivotal games of the post-apocalyptic RPG series and a beloved experience when it came out back in 2008, the upcoming Remaster can actually turn out to be a more faithful version of the game due to several technical constraints that had affected the original title in more ways than one.
In a recent interview on The Examined Game Youtube channel, former Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile, who had been in the industry for over two decades, shared some insights on Fallout 3 and said that because of numerous technological constraints, many of the originally intended design choices for the game didn’t make it, resulting in a severely ‘compromised’ experience when the game came out. But the new remaster can successfully restore all of those contents and make the overall experience really come alive in ways it was never possible with the original Fallout 3.
The dev stated the following:
“It’s confirmed now that they’re [Bethesda] doing a Fallout 3 Remaster, but I’m personally looking forward to that because we were super tech-constrained making Fallout 3, and you could only place so many lights, and again, textures are pretty small. Constantly worrying about the memory budget, or how much stuff you’re putting on screen.
So, it’s not like exactly how we intended, I get why people get more upset over movie remakes and stuff, but, in the case of games, particularly the art side of it, it’s 100% not what we intended and it was very, very constrained.”
He also added that he wants to see a remaster of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the current-gen systems too.
The characteristics of a great Remaster is it not only provides a more technically advanced and better looking experience, but also improves on the original gameplay in many areas, and looks like Bethesda’s upcoming Fallout 3 Remaster could be one of them.
