During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Sony has officially revealed the release date for God of War Laufey as the next entry in the iconic God of War series is confirmed to arrive on February 16, 2027. The announcement was also accompanied by a short release date trailer on the official Sony PlayStation account in Twitter/X, along with the following statement: “Enter the afterlife of the gods when God of War Laufey launches on PS5 February 16, 2027”.
Also, based on a report by IGN from the San Diego Comic Con panel, Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog has confirmed that the next huge entry in the mainline God of War series featuring Kratos as the protagonist, will be arriving after God of War Laufey and will directly tie into her story. During the panel, Balrog also stated: “Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next”.
However, no additional details regarding the next Kratos-led God of War title was given including when we may see it in the earliest or which platform it’s coming to, nor the setting behind it. But as the events of God of War Laufey tie into it, perhaps the game itself will answer some of those questions when we get to play it next year.
God of War Laufey stars Faye, Kratos’ wife in a spin-off adventure that takes place after her death in Ragnarok and the upcoming title is set to be a lot more action oriented experience in the same vein as the much older entries in the God of War series. And according to the devs themselves, the combat system in the upcoming entry in the series is influenced by the earlier, older games, in more ways than one, which is also clear from the gameplay video that was released during this year’s State of Play.
The upcoming God of War Laufey seems like an interesting detour for the decade-old franchise as it’ll likely help the devs explore another branch of the Norse mythology that’s apart from the mainline titles, while experimenting with it’s combat system to great effect and possibly create the most dazzling action title among the modern God of War games.
