Disgaea Mayhem is out, but its definitely not without its issues, the trailer is neat at least and we can confirm that the general insanity of the series still remains intact. These games are often parodies and shouldn’t be taken that seriously as they rely a ton in corny humor and deconstruction of tropes. But sometimes they do it in such a smart way that they have you intrigued on wanting to play more of them. In this case Disgaea Mayhem is more of a musou style game rather than a regular Strategy Role Playing Game like the series often is.
Disgaea Mayhem is silly
The price is expensive, and they could have made a new Disgaea game instead of this, thankfully its a spinoff and they will return back to their regular antics after this. Back in the PS2 days Disgaea was a very unique series that was worth trying out, however it was definitely not for everyone. There is a ton of grinding to be done in the main games, at the very least 500 hours was an amount of time you required to beat them entirely. In the case of Disgaea Mayhem however, strategy has been replaced by button mashing, and length has been reduced to 20 hours or less.
Its essentially just a spinoff that appeals to the super core fans of the series but has zero appeal for people who are outsiders, which is a thing you shouldn’t do when trying to get people into the main series via spinoffs. At the very least this will gatekeep the Disgaea series from the hands of people who don’t appreciate it so that’s a win. I wonder what they will try next if they decide to make a new Strategy RPG. There is a ton of new units they could create.
