The upcoming Wolverine from Insomniac Games is not just going to be yet another by-the-numbers videogame adaptation based on the iconic Marvel character but the studio is going to put a fresh new spin on the titular character and make this particular incarnation of Wolverine completely their own, just as they’ve already done with Spider-Man. Both the gameplay trailer and the recent CGI story trailer have established that this isn’t the same Wolverine we’ve known from the classic X-Men: The Animated Series or even from any other medium out there.
And that’s why, Marvel’s Wolverine will be getting a series of prequel comics that’ll shed insights on this particular version of the character as well as on the past, in-Universe events that have led to everything that happens in the game. Written by Insomniac Games’ narrative director Walt Williams, the first issue of the prequel comics for Wolverine is currently available digitally on Marvel Unlimited, although you can get physical copies from Insomniac’s booth at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.
The actual details of the plot is a bit sketchy right now but it’s currently known that Wolverine was once part of a particular task force named ‘Team X’ and he had walked out of the group three years before the game takes place. The first issue of the prequel series provides insights on why he had chose to leave the task force and that it includes Sabretooth, Sunfire and Mystique besides Wolverine and chances are that some of them could show up in the game as allies at some point.
While only the first issue has been out, it’s likely that the rest will be released before September 15 which is when the game comes out on the PS5.
Marvel’s Wolverine comes out in two different editions–the Standard version of the game will cost you $69.99 while the Digital Deluxe version sports a price tag of $79.99. There’s no mention of a collector’s edition that’s geared towards enthusiasts so if you were hoping for physical collectibles like statues and maybe action figures, looks like there won’t be any of that.
