Fans Are Bringing Donkey Kong 64 to PC With a Native Recompilation Port

A group of independent developers has announced Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled, an ambitious, unofficial project aimed at bringing Rare’s classic 3D platformer natively to the PC. Unlike traditional emulation, this project relies on static recompilation to translate the original Nintendo 64 code into a native PC application. The final release will feature substantial modern upgrades, including support for high-resolution graphics, uncapped frame rates, and native mod compatibility. To mitigate potential legal action from Nintendo, the development team has confirmed that the project will be distributed entirely without any copyrighted game assets, requiring users to provide their own files.

The announcement comes at a busy time for the 1999 title, which originally stood as the seventh best-selling game on the Nintendo 64, famously outpacing other genre staples like Banjo-Kazooie and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. While the game was re-released on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015, it only recently joined the Nintendo Switch Online library in June 2026 after years of frequent fan requests. This unofficial PC port represents only the third major effort to make the game playable on modern hardware, offering features that standard official digital re-releases typically lack.

In their announcement, the developers behind Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled also directly addressed a competing PC port project that is currently in development. The team sharply criticized the rival build, alleging that its creators relied heavily on artificial intelligence “vibe coding” to reconstruct the game. Describing that alternative version as poorly made, the Recompiled team emphasized their own hand-crafted approach to the game’s source code as a superior, more stable alternative for the community.

The project lands during a broader resurgence for the franchise, following the launch of Donkey Kong Bananza on Nintendo’s newer hardware in July 2025. That title, which paired Donkey Kong with a teenage version of Pauline, went on to win “Best Family Game” at the 2025 Game Awards and remains one of the platform’s highest-selling games behind Mario Kart World. While Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled currently lacks a definitive release date, it promises to give fans a highly customizable way to revisit one of the mascot’s most expansive historical adventures.
