Mass layoffs continue to hit the videogame industry at an unprecedented rate and this time with NBA 2K and WWE 2K studio Visual Concepts who has reportedly let go of an unknown number of employees recently. And one of the developers to first speak out about the layoffs is Brittany Thibodeaux, a software engineer who wrote in LinkedIn that many people, included her, were affected in the current round of layoffs by Visual Concepts.
Her message was followed by more employees who took to the social media platform to announce that they were let go by the studio as well:
“After three years and some change, my time at VC is at a close,” game designer Anna Hodges wrote, “I’m so grateful to all of the extremely talented, and dedicated people I’ve had the opportunity to work with.”
And more unfortunately, one of the employees wrote that their jobs was dismissed on a day they were out of work due to an autoimmune disease.
“Last week, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that will shorten my lifespan. Today, while on a sick day because of said autoimmune disorder, I was laid off,” game designer Nina Marotta wrote. “This is the second time in my short career that I’ve gone through this, and I am genuinely in agony both physically and mentally. Today, instead of resting my body, I am up shaking and sobbing and trying to wrap my head about what just happened.”
However, the studio hasn’t responded to the claims of layoffs yet so it’d be interesting to see how they address all of these employees losing their jobs.
Also, according to Insider Gaming, the team responsible for the WWE 2K titles were hit the hardest during the ongoing layoffs, including the mainline WWE 2K devs along with the team that had worked on the WWE 2K25: Netflix Edition. But as for the actual number of people who have lost their jobs in the layoffs, the numbers are still unknown.
