One of the most memorable and fun sections in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was the brief part where you could play as Venom and wreak all kinds of havoc with a sense of pure power fantasy that’s pretty much unmatched by everything else in the game. That section had also led to the possibility of a standalone Venom game, featuring a completely different character and cast which would be incredibly promising for a spin-off title for obvious reasons. But according to Nadji Jeter, the voice actor for Miles Morales, the title got canceled after the passing of Tony Todd in 2024 who was the voice actor for Venom.
“Let me give y’all an exclusive. We were going to have a Venom game. We were going to drop a Venom game and a Venom DLC, but we lost Tony Todd,” he said. “They showed me how everything was going to be. It was gonna be a Venom video game. Y’all played the Venom playthrough? It was just gonna be a Venom video game.”
Interestingly, in response to the possibility of the Venom title being canceled entirely, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg has commented on the Reset Era forums and said that the claim isn’t true. In the same forum, a certified dev has also claimed that the Venom game is definitely on the cards and was still on the discussion at this year’s GDC. It remains to be seen whether Insomniac themselves decide to announce anything related to Venom in the coming months as they gear up to release new materials for their upcoming and hotly anticipated Wolverine.
After the phenomenal success of Marvel’s Spider Man and Spider Man 2, Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game has garnered a ton of anticipation and hype cause just like Spider Man, Wolverine can also be a driver for amazing gameplay which could easily result in a great game, especially in the capable hands of Insomniac. The way Insomniac took Spider-Man and pretty much reinvented him up to the towering standards of current-gen AAA gaming, from both technical and mechanical standpoints, it sure looks like they could pull off the same with Wolverine as well, especially after the first teaser which looks pretty awesome and true to the iconic Marvel character.
Insomniac’s Wolverine is currently slated to release on September 15 this year with more news including a possible gameplay trailer set to be revealed in Spring 2026.
