It’s definitely becoming quite worrying and certainly a bit alarming after seeing generative AI creep up in so many new releases and how developers are completely bypassing any kind of AI disclosures beforehand. But thankfully, Capcom has recently stated that there won’t be any generative AI in their titles in any shape or form which definitely sounds assuring as one of the biggest videogame publishers confirm their games to be as much ‘handcrafted’ as possible, at least way more than many other studios.
During a recent shareholder meeting (as transcribed by Automaton), Capcom has stated: “Our company will not be implementing any AI-generated assets into our video game content. On the other hand, going forward, we plan to actively utilize this technology in order to improve efficiency and productivity of game development. That is why we are currently testing out various methods of usage across our departments, including graphics, sound, and programming.”
This effectively means that Capcom will only use AI for various technical aspects of game development which will ease off the developers’ works at lot more, potentially.
However, the company does support NVIDIA’s new DLSS 5 upscaler as showcased by Resident Evil Requiem where Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi has stated, “DLSS 5 represents another important step in pushing visual fidelity forward, helping players become even more immersed in the world of Resident Evil.”
Interestingly, DLSS 5 is nothing but AI, on steroids which sort of AI-fies the entire geometry and image quality, making the end result look shiny and crispy but completely devoid of life. Hopefully, after the overwhelming negative reaction on DLSS 5, it takes a back seat in game development, at least for a while as devs realize, gamers don’t like to play something that’s not made or worked on by real humans. Of course, huge megacorporations have all the incentive of using AI cause it helps them to produce the same amount of work while reducing their overall workforce by a lot which allows them more profit and revenue.
