The PS5 Pro’s upgraded PSSR which made it’s debut in Resident Evil Requiem is now headed to both Control and Alan Wake 2, developer Remedy has officially confirmed. The new and upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) analyzes all the pixels in an image and upscales them, which results in a boost in the effective resolution of over 50 titles on the PS5 Pro which essentially means sharper image quality with great fluid performance all around and minimal loss in detail, as that’s what what upscalers are all about.
In their official social media page, Remedy wrote: “CONTROL Ultimate Edition and Alan Wake 2 will support new PSSR. This more advanced version of PSSR will soon be available to all PlayStation 5 Pro owners, bringing noticeable improvements in image stability clarity of motion. Explore the Oldest House and Bright Falls with a new level of visual fidelity.”
However, no date was mentioned but it’s safe to say both titles will receive the upgraded PSSR support sooner rather than later, along with even more titles in this year. The new form of PSSR comes from Project Amethyst which was jointly developed by Sony and AMD, and utilizes the additional rendering horsepower of the PS5 Pro to make in-game visuals considerably crisper than what’s available on the base PS5 or on the Xbox Series X.
And although the new upscaling tech would definitely increase visual fidelity, it’s unknown whether they will be enough to make players replay both Control and Alan Wake 2. The actual value of upscaling lies in getting more FPS than what can be normally achieved by the GPU, without losing out on image quality significantly, at least. But you can already get those titles to run at a locked 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro, so what the new PSSR will do is bring further improvement to image quality without impacting overall performance.
