Legacy of Evil is a new indie game produced by a Brazilian studio. This new experience is a mix and match of a plenty of ideas. It is clearly inspired by Konami games, citing the developers, they do describe this one as a mix of Castlevania and R-Type. There’s plenty of bullet hell elements in this title, yet, despite this, there’s also some RPG elements sprinkled in. Some people might think this is just more Vampire Survivor, but it is very different from it. Those who are knowledgeable of gaming history will realize that this is basically Knightmare for the MSX system. We at Infinite Start will cover this love letter to a Konami hidden gem.
Indie games are oftentimes love letters towards older hidden gems that never basked in the glory of reaching mainstream. By doing this, small developers end up preserving ideas that were pretty good, but couldn’t find their way under such a competitive market that the past was. Games were quite expensive back then, but at the very least you were able to own them unlike today. We were promised ease of accessibility and cheap prices in the digital era, however, only the contrary has happened pricing wise. Leaving ethical matters that affect the consumer aside, Legacy of Evil is a love letter to Knightmare with plenty of new additions.
As you can see, you actually control a band of heroes instead of a single one. Scrolling has been greatly improved, back in the MSX era, scrolling in some games was rather choppy, and Knightmare was unfortunately affected by this. It is so nice to see indie developers resurrect good ideas and make them worth to revisit. If you are interested in playing this new game with a sprinkle of old, check out the new demo that dropped on Steam and wishlist it.
