Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Outsells Doom, Quake, and More, Says Former id Software Execs

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the latest release from Saber Interactive, is setting records, with both current and former leaders of the company calling it their fastest-selling game. CEO Tim Willits and former id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, both now at Saber, expressed their excitement about the game’s performance.

Tim Willits stated on X/Twitter, “Todd Hollenshead (former CEO of id Software) and I believe that Space Marine 2 is the fastest selling game we’ve ever worked on, including all the Quake, DOOM, Wolfenstein, and RAGE games over the years.”

Willits and Hollenshead both have long histories at id Software, known for developing iconic franchises like Doom and Quake. Willits left the company in 2019 after overseeing projects like Doom Eternal, while Hollenshead departed in 2013. Despite their successes at id Software, both now agree that Space Marine 2 has surpassed expectations.

This success follows reports that the game has already reached 2 million players, while maintaining high player counts on Steam. Strong player sentiment and positive reviews contribute to the game’s growing popularity, which Willits and Hollenshead believe sets it apart from their previous work.

While Doom (2016) sold over 2 million copies by 2017, and Doom Eternal reached an estimated 3 million at launch, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 appears to be on track to outpace these numbers.
