Grand Theft Auto 6 Exempt from SAG-AFTRA Strike

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike will not impact the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. Despite the strike affecting many games, GTA 6 remains unaffected, according to a representative from the union. This exemption allows performers to continue their work on the game.

The strike began on July 26 due to failed negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major video game publishers over the use of generative AI. While many games face potential delays, GTA 6 avoids this fate.

A SAG-AFTRA spokesperson confirmed to Kotaku that Grand Theft Auto 6 is “exempt” from the strike. Despite Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, being part of the negotiations, the game itself is not impacted. This means guild members can work on the game without repercussions.

SAG-AFTRA’s official database also states: “While not struck, this game is produced by a struck company. If you have been engaged under a daily contract for this game, you can show solidarity with your fellow union members by choosing not to sign new contracts on the game. However, you may work on the game and will not be disciplined for doing so.”

Rockstar Games has kept much of the game’s development under wraps. The first official trailer released earlier this year quickly garnered over 90 million views, indicating high anticipation for the game’s release.

The game is set for a fall 2025 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Details on the game’s cast remain undisclosed.
