Sea of Thieves Faces Significant Drop in PS5 Players

Sea of Thieves has experienced a dramatic decline in its PlayStation 5 player base, losing 58% of players in less than a month. This drop is surprising given the game’s initial success on the platform. When Sea of Thieves launched on PS5, it quickly became the most downloaded game in North America and Europe for May.

According to TrueTrophies, the data from GameInsights reveals a sharp decline in player engagement. This significant drop, within such a short period, has raised questions about the game’s long-term viability on the PS5.

Sea of Thieves initially thrived on PS5 due to its debut on the platform. It followed other Xbox exclusives like Grounded and Pentiment that also transitioned to PlayStation. However, despite a strong start, almost 60% of the players left the game within weeks.

While a decrease in players is typical for most games, the scale of this decline is unusual for a live-service title. Despite this, Sea of Thieves continues to receive regular updates from Rare, maintaining a dedicated core community. The developers show no signs of abandoning the game, ensuring continuous support and new content.
