PlayStation 5 Shortages Expected Well into 2022

Among the many difficult to obtain items in 2021, PlayStation 5 has remained among the most sought after, something that Hiroki Totoki, Sony Group CFO, thinks will extend into 2022.

This was said in a private briefing following Sony’s latest financial announcements. Sources came to Bloomberg suggesting components, including the now infamous semiconductors, are the bigger issue Sony is facing keeping up with demand.

I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand

While this update was expected, some people are now deadset on waiting until 2022 to purchase the console. There was already rumors of Sony moving to a new version of the AMD Zen 2 processor, which boasts a 6 nm process, as opposed to the PS5’s current 7 nm process. This would lead to a small performance boost, better energy use and possibly a smaller size. With this unit expected mid to late-2022, it makes sense to just wait over stressing for a possibly inferior model.

Naturally, none of this is set in stone but absolutely something to consider.
