Joy-Con 2 Controllers May Offer Switch 2 Owners Greater Personalization

Nintendo Switch 2 nostalgia keeps building momentum, and a seemingly official but now-deleted recent post suggests that users may enjoy a level of personalization with their new controllers. A recently deleted online post has sparked a stir among gamers, featuring what seem to be interchangeable cosmetic strips designed for the new console’s Joy-Con 2 controllers.

The brief glance at these accessories showed that they are designed to substitute segments of the Joy-Con 2 outer casing. Exactly, the strips would cover the space beginning just below the left and right shoulder buttons, curving around the bottom of the controllers’ contours. The ones listed had light blue and light red colors, which apparently duplicated the pale color highlights that were already available around the thumbsticks of the regular black Joy-Con 2. To everyone’s surprise, the listing also included contrasting strips in terms of colors, giving way to an even more customized look. Sold cheaply for about $3.46 per strip, the kits were said to come not just packaged with the ornamentation but even with added accessories like gel and a small pry bar, which were intended to assist in the tender task of exchanging the pieces.

The kits’ arrival has struck a chord among Nintendo fans, who have long cherished official means of customizing their hardware. Comparisons have been made with the PlayStation 5 faceplates and the New Nintendo 3DS interchangeable covers, both letting consumers personalize their machines. But with all the hype, some complaints have been made regarding the ease with which these third-party strips can be damaged and the level of precision required when installing them.

The Joy-Con 2 controllers themselves are an upgrade on the originals. Maintaining the capacity to magnetically attach to the master console unit or be removed wirelessly, they also include a quieter HD rumble feature, a considerate addition for gamers who desire a less intrusive tactile feedback experience. Whereas the default retail configuration of the Joy-Con 2 features a matte black color and subtle light blue and red highlighting on the analog sticks, other control sets are also available for $94.99.

While these leaked cosmetic strips caused a stir, let it be noted that Nintendo has not yet officially made available any form of customization for the Joy-Con 2. In addition, any prying open of the controllers without approval from the manufacturer could invalidate the warranty, something that would-be customizers would do well to keep in mind. With the expected June 5th launch of the Switch 2 approaching, the gaming world is still eager to learn if Nintendo itself or its partners would eventually adopt the idea of personalized Joy-Con 2 controllers.
