Earthion is truly a surprise to see. This game is being made by Ancient Corporation, company made by famous composer Yuzo Koshiro, who brought us the best 16-bit soundtracks of all time. The man himself has a single goal in mind, prove to people that old systems are still as valid as they were in the past. With the amount of effort being put into Earthion, the technical masterpiece surprise even the most seasoned Megadrive programmers. The game looks impossible, but its actually a real thing on real hardware from the 90s. We at Infinite Start will cover this work of art.
It is probable that this year, or the next, we will be able to play this amazing retro revival. There will also be a PC port and Switch port for those who do not own an actual Megadrive, but for a more faithful experience it is recommended to get one. The visuals in this game are stunning, and surpass a ton of games for the system, showing that the juice of the popular Sega console isn’t over yet.
What we are seeing might be the magic of Blast Processing, feature that was flexed way back then that people didn’t know what it did. It is cool to see truly skilled programmers take a shot at pushing such an old and amazing system to its limits, as these are the true impressive things of technology. It is not about the hardware or the latest gadgets, the excitement comes from those who properly unlock the potential of them.
Taking into account the amount of e-waste we have to deal with on the daily, it is sad to think that all of those hardware pieces we cycled through so quick have actual hidden potential in them. People have lost the plot, and almost nobody knows how to use our current and quickly outpaced GPUs to produce stunning and optimized results. The fault however, comes from the developers of such hardware, that keep that documentation in secret.
