The new Nintendo Switch 2 is off to some rough starting waters, with comparisons to the Xbox One being made, and not the kind one would wish. Fears over the price of the new console and the price of games are motivating the comparisons.
Along with the discontent, there has been an eyebrow-raising Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser statement. Bowser mentioned that the price of the Switch 2 would be too high for some players and stated Nintendo will keep selling previous Switch generations so that options are made available to cost-conscious players. This was compared to a statement by former Microsoft executive Don Mattrick for the Xbox One, which had not been well received when released.
Aside from cost, some of the features of the Switch 2 are also being compared side by side with the Xbox One. Even though the Switch 2 is not an online console, the fact that it has a camera, game sharing, and game-key cards that do not carry the full game has seen the two consoles being compared.
Although game sharing is nothing new to Nintendo, in that the Nintendo DS could do similar things, other similarities, paired with cost concerns, are bringing apprehension in some fans. The fact that tariffs would be added to the price of the Switch 2 is only adding to the anxiety.
Although there are apprehensions, there is some consolation for the fans with Nintendo’s assurance of supporting the old Switch models. That ensures the players who are not yet ready to upgrade will not be left behind.
Overall, the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is proving to be more difficult than Nintendo would have liked. The comparisons to the Xbox One, fueled by price and some functionality, are building a stern narrative for the new console. Time alone will tell how Nintendo manages to fix these problems and win over holdout fans.
