A surprise new patch for the Oblivion Remaster on PC is causing several graphics related problems such as players unable to change the upscaling methods in the game after installing the update which is resulting in lower performance. The update didn’t have any patch notes or descriptions of what it aimed to address but as a lot of players have found out, it actually caused more problems than it intended to fix.
“Can’t change the upscaling methods anymore. It’s set to “off” and while the arrows are clickable nothing happens. So I closed the game, disabled fluid motion in the nvidia app (was testing something before the patch came) and started the game again. Loading times for my save are long again and still can’t change upscaling settings lol,” according to a Reddit user.
Several players have also reported significantly lower performance after the update, which is the first patch since the Oblivion Remaster came out less than a week ago.
Upscaling technologies such as DLSS and FSR 4 have been a great help for players without the top-of-the-line graphics cards as they provide a huge boost to in-game performance without heavily compromising visual fidelity. In fact in some cases, DLSS or FSR actually makes an in-game image look even crisper and better than native resolution, which is great for many players out there. So having to run a game without any upscaling is clearly disadvantageous in more ways than one.
Also, for games that uses extensive Ray Tracing, running without any sort of upscaling in place can result in drastically lower performance for the majority of graphics cards out there.
However, Bethesda has acknowledged the problems that many players are having and they’re currently working to address all of them, as they’ve confirmed on a post yesterday on their official support page. It also seems that players who’ve bought the Oblivion Remaster from the Microsoft Store are the only ones having the graphics related problems after installing the new patch.
“Any graphic settings adjusted prior to the Microsoft Store hotfix are still enabled and function normally,” Bethesda stated. “However, you will temporarily be unable to adjust those settings due to the issue with the settings UI. The team is taking a look and working out a resolution, we will share more info as soon as we can.”
The Oblivion Remastered is currently out now for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and is also available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. You can also get the game at a 17% discount via the ongoing Level Up Sale from Fanatical which is available till April 27 so if you want to buy the game right now, you better hurry and get it from the ongoing sale and save some bucks.
