DOOM 2016 was considered one of the best boomer shooters in recent times. It truly revitalized the series, and brought a ton of new people into the DOOM craze. The PC community hold the DOOM franchise as one of the most important pillars in the industry. It was meant to be the game that showed how free and crazy the PC platform could go. Nowadays, we treat shooters as that thing that always happens on Fridays, but in the 90s, in the midst of religious fearmongering, DOOM was truly a breakthrough. We at Infinite Start will discuss this amazing news for DOOM 2016, in 2025.
Thanks to the folks at GOG, it is now possible to buy, and own an installer for, DOOM 2016. Many people have been requesting this for years, but idSoftware never did anything about that. Now, players are able to install their game from a backup, as it should have always been. Right to own will be the next fight we will have to deal with in the future, as the ever increasing threat of physical media removal looms.
Whenever you buy a thing, you are bombarded with having to subscribe to things, sign in through QR nonsense, and a bunch of other unnecessary slop. People just wish to own their stuff, but when you push agree on the EULA, you are basically giving away your right to own. This is insanity, and people shouldn’t be compliant with these egregious rights violations.
Back in the day, you could have full games on physical media, full games that feel more complete and soulful than many of the things that are being put out today. Indie games are trying to bring us back to those times, but as physical media disappears, it is hard to find those indie titles that really matter. If you still haven’t played DOOM 2016 for some reason, its currently at 80% discount on GOG, just one purchase, and you keep it forever.
