Phantom Thief Angels is a magical girl Visual Novel that came out on the PSP in the year 2011, which is quite late on the lifespan of the portable system. The game never released outside of Japan and remained an exclusive for decades. Now, overseas players will be able to enjoy the original game that has been adapted to modern PC resolution standards, except not. This remaster seems to suffer from lack of voice acting that was in the original, and instead voices are sold as a DLC. There’s no explanations as to why this is happening, but we can assume something happened between developers and voice actors. We at Infinite Start will cover this release.
If you don’t particularly mind voice acting in your Visual Novel releases, then this one might be for you. The affordable price and other factors make it be a good package if you are a fan of the genre and want to support an official release. However, is is quite odd that a decision was made to sell voice acting as a DLC, that while affordable, makes up for almost a half of the game’s cost. Nobody knows what happened, or why that decision was taken, but we can assume something happened during licensing deals.
As long as the quality is good, perhaps it can be excused, but we have to take into account that remasters like this often employ subpar upscaling techniques that often ruin the original images. There is no fan translation available for the original PSP version of the game, which is a bummer, this is the only way to experience the game in English. The game is better understood after watching the anime and enjoying the other games in the series. If you wish to revive the older days of visual novels, this one might be a good pick.
