Recent report from X user Mike Odyssey explains that Nintendo has filed a fresh patent that indicates the Nintendo Switch 2 will employ AI-driven upscaling to improve handheld mode performance. The fresh patent, filed on March 13 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), explains how the console will upscale images from 540p to 1080p with the use of machine learning algorithms. This upgrade will bring higher frame rates and visuals fidelity without calling for an enormous boost in processing power.
AI upscaling on the Switch 2 works like Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR. Rather than outputting games in native 1080p, the console will render games at 540p and then upscale in real time with the aid of AI processing. The operation has a radical impact on battery life since upscaling draws less power compared to native resolution rendering. But nothing is said about using this upscaling technology docked or just handheld.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has been the gaming world’s worst-kept secret, and there have been rumors and leaks running for more than a year. The console will feature:
Nintendo assured that further information regarding the price, features, and release date of the Switch 2 will be shared during the April 2 Nintendo Direct.
While the AI upscaling is an impressive addition, the real question is what games will be compatible with the feature. Some of the newly announced Switch games, including Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, will experience a boost when running on the new hardware.
With machine learning-based upscaling, Nintendo Switch 2 may power more seamless, fully immersive handheld gaming with long-lasting battery power. The details will be shared following the presentation of Nintendo Direct later today on April 2.
