Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 Requires Microsoft Account, Raises Concerns

The new PlayStation 5 edition of Forza Horizon 5 will require users to associate a Microsoft account, confirmed by an official Forza Support FAQ. Although the action is not a surprise considering that Microsoft is involved, it has raised alarm among PlayStation players when it comes to the future safety and playability of the game.

Released on April 29, Forza Horizon 5 is currently the most-awaited multiplatform Xbox launch. The open-world racing game will benefit from full crossplay on Xbox, PS5, and PC, with full multiplayer support. The game will also have PS5 Pro graphical enhancements and additional pre-order gifts, such as four days’ early access to Premium Edition owners. The forced Microsoft account has, however, raised eyebrows with PlayStation players.

Forza Horizon 5 Microsoft Account Requirement

As per the official FAQ, users will be asked to log in with a Microsoft account on their first launch of the game. The account will be tied to their PlayStation Network (PSN) account forever, and there will not be an option to switch later. Even returning players who already have a linked Microsoft account for other titles like Sea of Thieves will need to link again with Forza Horizon 5.

Issues Regarding Game Preservation

Some PlayStation players are concerned that this clause may result in preservation problems. As Forza Horizon 5 depends on Microsoft account services, players are concerned that if Microsoft were ever to shut down those services, the game would be rendered unusable on PS5. That is compounded by the reality that Forza Horizon 5 will not be available for physical sale on PS5, so there is no alternative means of playing the game except within the digital domain of Microsoft.

Microsoft justifies its move, claiming that the account linking is required for crossplay. Some players might be irritated, but Microsoft’s openness about the matter is to be appreciated—particularly in contrast to Sony’s out-of-the-blue PSN account requirement for Helldivers 2, which generated enormous outrage.

All this aside, Forza Horizon 5 is still a much-awaited release, with players eagerly looking forward to playing its quick-paced racing action on PS5.
