Dwarf Fortress drops a new update to spice up the PC game

Dwarf Fortress is an overly ambitious project that tries to simulate an open world base building game with merely some ASCII characters. There is two versions of the game, one that is a paid one on Steam and has a GUI, and the original free version on the site linked above. Both have their own charm but, the original version is even better, since its reminiscent to those old PC games from the 80s. Representing everything as ASCII is genius, especially if you don’t know how to make proper graphics. We at Infinite Start will document this new update that came out a while ago.

Dwarf Fortress’s new content

Dwarf Fortress Classic 51.06 has dropped, and with it came a lot of changes and stability upgrades. Dwarf Fortress is an extremely ambitious game, everything is active and has its own “intelligence”. Of course, all of this is done in the constraints of the game, but this title is proof that you don’t even need graphics to make a game that feels alive. Your settlement growing and animals birthing new ones is enough to feel as if the entire world was just expanding and living as you play.

This can however cause a lot of stability issues and unprompted occurrences. Sometimes behaviors go off the routine and end up getting funny. The game has various bugs, but many of these are actually being used by the community as if they were actual mechanics. The lack of a proper GUI might make the game an actual chore to learn, so it is not for everyone. There is plans to add some Lua support to properly expand the game, so maybe this is a call for Lua programmers to get ready and make some mods.

If you are interested in this ambitious project, you can get it for free on the official page or pay for the GUI release on Steam or itch.io.
