Assassin’s Creed Shadows to Feature it’s ‘Canon’ mode, a first in the Series

Besides the usual game mode that allows the player complete free reign over making choices throughout the narrative, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows will feature a whole new ‘Canon’ mode which will remove a large part of story choices from the game and instead adhere to a set, framed narrative path. This new mode, which is a first in the long running series, enables a hands-off approach with it’s main storyline, although it will still allow players to romance anyone they wish to in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

And in a recent interview with Gamerant, Jonathan Dumont, Creative Director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, have provided insights behind this mode and what prompted the devs to add this unique narrative feature into the game.

“When we introduced a choice of characters and dialogue choices in AC Odyssey, many of our fans loved the idea, but some expressed their disappointment in not having a definitive and canon narrative for the game that could be embedded in the AC lore meta story, “ stated Dumont.

“After speaking with our fans during development, we decided to add a mode that takes out all the choices for Shadows and that can serve as a reference story within the franchise. This way players can enjoy the more RPG style of narrative or a more linear one, if they prefer.”

This new meta-narrative experience in Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also add to it’s replayability as besides playing through the usual route as featured in the previous titles, gamers will also want to see the cannonical version of both Naoe and Yasuke’s story from a historically accurate perspective. It’s also another example of how Assassin’s Creed Shadows is easily the most ambitious game in the series, in practically every way.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to arrive on March 20 for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S and the PC platform. You can pre-order the game’s Standard and Digital Deluxe Editions right now on Steam.
