Ubisoft let us in on some fresh tidbits about Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ sword customization system, teasing how specifically players will get to customize weapons when it lands on March 20. It is set within Feudal Japan, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows letting the player customize guns based on specific playstyles through its two quite different protagonists.
The game also includes the samurai-themed Yasuke character inspired from the actual African samurai that operated in Japan and Naoe, which is a shinobi-themed character with an emphasis on stealth and speed. All characters will make use of their own unique play style, as Yasuke uses basic combat and heavy weapons while Naoe uses stealth and speed. Character weapon customization will be a central part of mission approaches when players can switch in-game between characters.
Ubisoft recently posted a video of katana customization, demonstrating the richness of weapon customization in the game. Players will be able to customize various parts of weapons, including the blade, handle, guard, and saya (scabbard), with at least nine options per part. Katana customization alone was demonstrated, but it is believed that all weapons in the game will have the same level of customization.
Not only will customization influence the look of weapons, but also their behavior during combat. Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will have a transmog system, which enables players to change the visual look of weapons without changing their stats. Ubisoft has not yet shown how the customization options will be unlocked, but most believe they will be unlocked through progression in the game or buying new weapons.
Aside from guns customizing, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also feature new base-building mechanics, taking the player even deeper into Feudal Japan. Despite earlier leaks of game information prematurely, Ubisoft has maintained a steady flow of hype with constant updating and teasers.
One of Ubisoft’s most widely anticipated titles, Assassin’s Creed Shadows tries to merge the stealth origins of the series with the action strategy newer games are famous for. With its high-end customization and two-protagonist mechanics, the game aims to provide one of the most varied experiences in the series to date.
