Rumor Suggests the Next God of War Game will be a Prequel

Little’s known about God of War’s future, given that few updates come out about it, but now a new rumor places the game’s sequel once again in Greek territory. Santa Monica Studio could be hard at work with a prequel focused on a much younger Kratos, as suggested by one rumor, from the industry insider himself, Tom Henderson, detailing it would flesh out the area between God of War 3 and the rebooted 2018 title.

Ever since God of War Ragnarök concluded the Norse saga, there has been much speculation amongst fans as to which mythology Kratos will next take a deep dive into. Most have pointed towards Egypt being the likely destination, especially after God of War: Fallen God, a comic book that was set between the Greek and Norse realms. According to Henderson, though, it will not be set in Egypt but instead returns to Greece in order to delve into Kratos’ past.

Whether this would be a full-fledged prequel, akin to God of War: Ascension, or it could be tied into the rumored remasters of the original God of War trilogy for the series’ 20th anniversary, is unknown. Henderson himself said he wasn’t fully confident in the details, so this should be taken with a grain of salt.

If Santa Monica Studio does go back to Greece, the most logical thing would be to explore Kratos’ departure from his homeland. In God of War, 2018, it’s briefly mentioned that he left by boat and arrived in Midgard, but Fallen God hinted that his journey was far more complicated, possibly involving the Egyptian pantheon. The stuff leading up to that-a prequel-could delve deeper into what happened after the fall of Olympus and eventually how Kratos found his way to the Norse world.

The question is, whether the next game will be a Greek prequel or something entirely different, and all fans are waiting for word from Santa Monica Studio. Until then, speculations will go on about where Kratos’ next adventure will take him-and if he’ll be facing familiar gods once again.
