It is surprising to see Pocketpair, developers of Palworld, is still up in business after the massive litigation Nintendo unleashed. While the developers might have infringed upon copyright with their egregious lookalike, it is not fair to dismiss the entire company as bad. The CEO might have terrible takes for the industry and the future, but its workers might not think the same way. We at Infinite Start will cover what could be a massive win for them.
It seems that there was lots of success when Pocketpair decided to expand into publishing. While there’s lots of issues with the current publishing landscape, we can hope that they are able to bring some winds of change. Publishers often reap most of the rewards out of the hard work of developers, a very unfair situation. Developers often put hours into trying to make an amazing game yet, those who earn more mostly just administer budgets.
What the future holds is uncertain, however, Pocketpair has a lot of issues too. In the past year, Nintendo enacted a litigation upon them due to their blatant rip of assets. Unfortunately, Nintendo also went to the throat of the developers by using draconian measures to litigate against game mechanics too. There is no hero in this legal battle, just two companies with different interests.
Another egregious act that Pocketpair committed was using AI as a central feature to one of its titles. This AI steals art from people to generate terrible doodles. It is sad to see that a company that was touted as bringing change just happened to bring terrible things too. One might be a fervent fan of Palworld, however, one shouldn’t be blind to the shadiness of Pocketpair itself.
It is important that consumers are able to defend their own interests and protect the quality of the medium. Unfortunately, it seems that many are more focused on pitting Palworld against Pokémon.
