Phil Spencer Shuts Down Gears of War Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

If Gears of War fans were hoping for a big announcement about a Marcus Fenix Collection, Phil Spencer’s latest comments might be disappointing. After fans noticed the achievements of Xbox CEO Phil Spencer in Gears 2 and 3, speculation ran wild that he was perhaps going to revisit the series for a remastered. However, Spencer has blocked such speculation with his recent comments which suggested other wise.

Why Was Spencer Playing Gears of War?

In a recent conversation with former IGN member Destin Legarie, Spencer explained that his return to the Gears of War trilogy wasn’t part of some secret project. Instead, he was simply playing the co-op title with a friend who had supposedly never experienced the series before. While discussing the benefits of Xbox’s cloud save system, he casually brought up how he was able to load up an old Gears of War 3 save from 2011.

His comments weren’t made in response to the Marcus Fenix Collection rumors, but they effectively put an end to them—for now. That doesn’t mean a remastered collection is off the table, but it’s clear that Spencer’s recent Gears activity wasn’t tied to any upcoming announcement.

Could a Marcus Fenix Collection Still Happen?

Even though Spencer wasn’t teasing anything, the demand for a Gears of War remastered isn’t going away anytime soon. With Gears of War: E-Day taking the franchise in a new direction, some believe an official remastered could help introduce the series to new players—especially with Microsoft’s increasing focus on multi-platform releases.

For now, though, it looks like Gears of War fans will have to be patient. There’s no word on when E-Day will launch, and if a Marcus Fenix Collection is in the works, it might be a long way off. Until then, fans should keep an eye on Xbox and The Coalition for any updates.
