Sony Announces upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn Film Adaptation at CES

During this year’s CES, Sony has officially announced a movie adaption of Horizon Zero Dawn, the hugely popular post-apocalyptic action adventure series by developer Guerrilla Games. The upcoming film based on the acclaimed IP is made possible by the collaboration between PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures which was also announced during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference.

Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, has confirmed that Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are currently in the “early stages” of the film’s production process. He stated, “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”

However, no release window has been announced so far but seeing as it’s still on the pre-production state, it may take quite a bit of time before we can get any further information on the film. It’s also worth noting that Columbia Pictures has produced the successful Uncharted movie in 2022 which starred Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan.

Released back in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn sees machine hunter Aloy (voiced by Ashly Burch) in a post-apocalyptic World that’s overrun by machines. The story is centered around the protagonist in a mission to uncover her own past across the lust and overgrown future World that’s also home to small pockets of Humanity who mostly survive in unique tribes. The game was praised for it’s Open World exploration, unique combat mechanics and engrossing story and it’s success had led to an expansion titled The Frozen Wilds along with it’s sequel Horizon Forbidden West, which came out in 2022 and is one of the most beautiful looking games that you can play.

And while there’s no official synopsis for the film adaptation, it would most likely based around Aloy’s origin story, which would basically adapt the events of the first game.
