Resident Evil 4 Remake Reaches 9 Million Copies Sold

Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake has achieved another massive milestone, surpassing 9 million copies sold since its release in March 2023. The announcement came via Capcom’s official Twitter account, accompanied by celebratory artwork featuring iconic characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Saddler enjoying snacks and a game of bingo.

This remarkable achievement comes just months after the game hit 8 million sales, further solidifying its status as a standout title in the Resident Evil franchise. The game’s momentum was boosted by the release of the Gold Edition in early 2023 and its arrival on iOS later that year, broadening its audience.

The 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 reimagines the classic 2005 game, which marked a pivotal shift in the series’ direction. Departing from its survival horror roots, Resident Evil 4 embraced a more action-oriented approach, following Leon S. Kennedy on a mission to rescue the president’s daughter, Ashley Graham, from a sinister cult.

This gameplay evolution proved to be a winning formula, helping Resident Evil 4 become the fastest-selling game in the franchise. According to Alex Aniel, author of Itchy, Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil, its rapid sales outpaced even Resident Evil Village, which sold just 500,000 copies by its eighth quarter.

With Resident Evil 4’s continued success, fans are eagerly speculating on Capcom’s next move. Many are hoping for a remake of Resident Evil 5, especially given the short gap between the releases of the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes.

Other titles, like Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, have also been floated as contenders for modern remakes due to their importance to the series’ overarching narrative. Of course, fans wouldn’t say no to an announcement of Resident Evil 9, which could further expand the series’ lore.

The sustained popularity of Resident Evil 4 speaks to its enduring legacy and Capcom’s ability to innovate while honoring the series’ roots. As fans await the next chapter, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down, with each new milestone fueling excitement for what’s to come.
